A career spent asking how a brain becomes a person
James Tetrud, MD, is a neurologist and former Professor of Neurology at Stanford University Medical Center, where his clinical and research work focused primarily on Parkinson’s disease and the disorders of human movement and cognition. Across that career he returned continually to a single question: how does the physical structure of a brain give rise to behaviour, to judgement, and to identity?
It is a question that medicine can approach but not finish. After decades of pursuing it through research and patient care, Dr. Tetrud turned to fiction as a second method, a way to examine the boundary between what is known, what is permitted, and what can only be imagined. His debut novel, Up North, marked his entry into science fiction and set the pattern for the work that followed: scientific realism carried by characters rather than exposition.
His second novel, Dark Messengers, grew out of a fascination with intelligence that is not human. Members of the Corvidae family, ravens and crows in particular, possess cognitive abilities that overturn every assumption behind the phrase “bird brain.” Some solve problems that defeat a chimpanzee or a six-year-old child. Drawing on advances in neuroscience, genetics and cognitive science, the novel asks what happens when scientific curiosity outpaces ethical certainty, and what an enhanced intelligence might conclude about the species that created it.
Dr. Tetrud’s fiction reflects both the discipline of a physician-scientist and the curiosity of a lifelong student of the mind. His work asks how intelligence emerges, what responsibility accompanies discovery, and whether humanity is prepared for the consequences of its own ingenuity. He lives with his wife in Northern California, where he continues to write and to follow developments in neuroscience, environmental science, and the widening conversation between science and society.
